Changes

I’ve changed the thingy to represent the cold, austere Russian with the gray and the “society” with the Fleur.

Well, ladies, I’ve started the book!  I’m actually on page 23!  (AND, I’ve read the introduction!).  I’ll be posting a schedule very soon.

Yes, I don’t know if reading this book this summer is the smartest thing I’ve ever done–I’m a bit busy with the children, but the book, so far, is good.  I’m understanding what’s happening.  But, whoa, I didn’t know about all the French.  Luckily, I am able to read footnotes.  It’s very interesting that Russian “society” spoke French.  See, I’m learning already!

A little background on the title

Original Title: Война и мир, Voyna i mir

The words in Russian meaning PEACE and WORLD/SECULAR SOCIETY are homophones.  The pre-1918 spelling of the title would have had it translated into WAR AND WORLD/SECULAR SOCIETY but Tolstoy gave the novel the title la guerre et la paix when he had it translated into French.

So that is my attempt at excitement toward this book.  sorry about the screwy font.  That may be a sign . . .

War and Peace

Are we doing this?  The edition is the blue hardback huge one.  Do we want to try to recruit some others?  Should I ask some more questions?  I think we should make Tammy join us.
